VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, may be geek speak for calls routed through cyberspace. But for many consumers, VoIP translates into ever-cheaper and sometimes feature-rich telephone alternatives. Consider the Skype service I've been testing. It lets members talk free from one computer to another.

Skypeとは、ルクセンブルグにあるSkype Technologiesという小さな会社が開発したIP電話のソフトだ。これが今，世界中の通信事業者から注目される存在になっている。

Skypeの特徴は、

1. ソフトが無料で使える
2. 固定電話に引けをとらない音質
3. WindowsMessengerのような操作性
4. P2Pネットワーク技術を流用している為、設備が不要

しかし、記事にもあるとおり、まだまだ課題は多い。例えば、固定電話からの着信が出来ないなどだ。いずれにせよ、VoIPの技術は近年急速に発達してきている。サービスの種類も豊富になってきた今日では、セキュリティ、料金、使い勝手・・・等々、様々な面を比較して、自分に最適なものを選ぶ必要がある。
